Democracy is More Than Elections

Election day is not the process of democracy, but the final expression of the process. The process nominates candidates, designs policy positions and crafts a platform; the process takes years to reach the election stage, and never truly ends. But this final stage is where we stand and choose between the visions offered to us by opposing sides presenting their priorities and their intentions. This is where we choose which direction we want to head in.

In joining the UUA, each of our congregations commits to encouraging the use of the democratic process in the world. That means each of us needs to participate as fully as possible in that process. That is how we affirm and promote our values.

Please, if you have not done so, go tomorrow and be counted at your polling place. Take this crucial step and help choose our course. Don’t forget, though, that this is just one step in the process, and the process needs your input at every other step as well. Stay informed and vocal as we watch how this choice plays out and be ready to help shape policy, to the best of your ability, for the next round of elections.
